Alopecia

Alopecia refers to hair loss or baldness that can occur in different areas of the body, typically on the scalp. It can affect anyone and is often linked to genetic, hormonal, or environmental factors.

Understanding Alopecia

Alopecia is a term you may have heard related to hair loss. But what exactly does it mean? Essentially, alopecia refers to any form of hair loss, whether it's a minor recession or complete baldness. It's not restricted to your scalp either; alopecia can potentially cause hair loss across your entire body.

What Causes Alopecia?

There are various causes for alopecia which can be broadly classified into genetic, hormonal and environmental factors[^1^]. For instance, Androgenetic alopecia , also known as male-pattern or female-pattern baldness is largely driven by genetics and hormonal changes.

Certain medical conditions like thyroid disorders or autoimmune diseases like Alopecia Areata can also lead to significant hair loss. Other environmental factors could include stress or trauma.

Types of Alopecia

There are several types of alopecia with varying degrees of severity:

  1. Androgenetic Alopecia: This is perhaps the most common type experienced by both men and women due to aging and genetic predisposition.
  2. Alopecia Areata: An auto-immune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy hair follicles leading to patchy hair loss.
  3. Telogen Effluvium: A temporary form of hair loss usually following stress, shock or a traumatic event.
  4. Anagen Effluvium: This type commonly occurs in people undergoing chemotherapy where rapidly dividing cells like hair follicles are affected.
